Hindi is spoken mainly in the Northern part of India. However
it is widely understood all across India except a few states of
South India. It is spoken in the states of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh,
Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Panjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh,
Bihar, parts of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Outside
India, Hindi speaking population is found in Mauritius, Fiji,
Guyana, Trinidad, UAE, Yemen, South Africa, Singapore, Uganda,
Nepal, Germany, UK, Australia & New Zealand. More than 180 million
people in India regard Hindi as their mother tongue. Another 300
million use it as second language. Outside India, Hindi speakers
are about 1 million in USA; about 6 million in Mauritius; about
8 million in South Africa; about 2 million in Yemen; about 1 million
in Uganda; about 5,000 in Singapore; 8 million in Nepal; 20,000
in New Zealand and 30,000 in Germany. It is written in Devanagri
script.
